Myelodysplastic Syndrome: Understanding the Causes and Symptoms

Myelodysplastic syndrome is a group of rare disorders that occurs when the blood-forming cells of the bone marrow function abnormally. It is a type of cancer. Certain cases of myelodysplastic syndrome are mild whereas certain cases are chronic.


In a patient having the myelodysplastic syndrome, the immature cells, that is the stem cells in the blood don’t mature to form white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. The immature blood cells are otherwise also known as blasts. These immature cells leave no space for healthy blood cells and platelets.

What are the symptoms of myelodysplastic syndrome? People with myelodysplastic syndrome may not. Experience any signs and symptoms in their initial stages. However, the following symptoms are seen in patients having the myelodysplastic syndrome,

  • Excessive fatigue

  • Feeling tired

  • Shortness of breath

  • Frequent infections

  • Easy bleeding

  • Easy bruising

  • Small red marks and bruises under the skin

  • Paleness

What are the risk factors of myelodysplastic syndrome? The various risk factors of myelodysplastic syndrome include the following,

  • Previous treatment with radiation therapy or chemotherapy

  • Old age

  • Exposure to chemical like benzene

  • Having inherited conditions like bloom syndrome, down syndrome, Schwachman-Diamond syndrome

  • Certain blood diseases

There are several complications that may arise due to myelodysplastic syndrome. These include,

  • Anemia

  • Bleeding that doesn't stop

  • Recurring infections

  • Increased risk of cancer

Diagnostic tests that may be done for diagnosing myelodysplastic syndrome are,

  • Physical examination

  • Medical history examination

  • Blood tests

  • Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy


Blood transfusions, medicines, and bone marrow transplantation are commonly used treatments for myelodysplastic syndromes.
