Bacterial Meningitis - Things You Need to Know

Inflammation of the fluid and the three membranes (meninges) surrounding the brain and the spinal cord is known as meningitis. Meningitis caused by bacterial infection is known as bacterial meningitis. However, there are other types of meningitis, like viral, fungal, parasitic, etc.

Bacterial meningitis is contagious and is caused as a result of bacterial infection. The most common types of bacteria that are responsible for causing meningitis include Streptococcus pneumonia (pneumococcal meningitis), Neisseria meningitides (meningococcal meningitis), Staphylococcus aureus (staphylococcal meningitis), Listeria monocytogenes, Group B step, Escherichia coli, and Haemophilus influenza.

How does bacterial meningitis spread? The bacterial infection spreads from one person to another through the secretions from an infected person during coughing, sneezing, or personal contact (kissing), from mother to the baby during birth. The infection can also develop by consuming bacteria-contaminated food.

What are the symptoms of bacterial meningitis? Fever, headache, neck stiffness, nausea, vomiting, confusion, photophobia, skin rash, and easy bruising are common symptoms of bacterial meningitis. In children, the symptoms of meningitis include irritability, vomiting, high-pitched wailing, abnormal reflexes, swelling in the head, loss of appetite, and seizures.

Who is at risk of developing meningitis? Infants below one year of age, people who have a weak immune system, students living in hostels and dorms, people who have had any illness and been sick recently, a head injury, traveling to countries where this disease is common, military recruits, people who have a damaged sleep or who have got their spleen removed, and people who have not got their bacterial meningitis vaccination are certain risk factors that increase a person’s chances of developing bacterial meningitis.

Once diagnosed, the treatment of bacterial meningitis must begin as soon as possible. Meronem 500mg Injection is used to treat bacterial meningitis. It is an antibiotic injection containing the active ingredient meropenem. This medication produces its action by inhibiting the cell wall synthesis of the bacteria and thereby inhibiting its growth. If you have bacterial meningitis, your doctor might prescribe you Meronem 500mg Injection.
