An overview of head and neck cancer

Head and neck cancers happen due to abnormal multiplication and division of the cells. These cancers occur in the squamous cells lining the mucosal surfaces of the head and neck. These cancers can potentially spread and affect the surrounding tissues and lymph nodes. The cancers of mouth, oropharynx, larynx, nasopharynx, nasal cavity, paranasal sinus, tonsil, and salivary gland comes under head and neck cancers. Head and neck cancers do not include cancers of the brain and eyes.
Various risk factors are associated with the development of head and neck cancers. However, the two major risk factors are tobacco and alcohol consumption.
